Cultural Diversity and Inclusion(1.5 contact hours)
Bon Secours Mercy Health is currently deploying a system-wide D&I strategy that is tailored to each market around the five pillars of the healthcare system: workplace, workforce, patient experience, community, and marketplace. This session will explore the strategic diversity and inclusion platform for Bon Secours Mercy Health, and how D&I can be leveraged to improve the patient experience.
Our Speaker: Dr. Nathan Ziegler, Director of Diversity and Inclusion
Nathan Ziegler is the Director of Diversity and Inclusion for Bon Secours Mercy Health. He leads the strategic integration of the D&I strategy throughout the BSMH footprint. He is also responsible for developing tailored education for all associates of BSMH, including volunteers, contractors, and non-contracted physician.
Nathan has a long career developing educational programs centered around diversity, inclusion, and multiculturalism. He is a published author in international journals of education, has presented his work globally, and has served as a consultant with international and national organizations.
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to:
1. Define diversity and inclusion
2. Explore their own diversity and the diversity of their team.
3. Lead their team using principles of D&I
4. Identify opportunities to reinforce the values of diversity and inclusion with their staff.

Joint Commission and Regulatory Survey (1.5 contact hours)
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to:
- 1. Identify specific expectations for volunteers during an accreditation and/or regulatory survey
- 2. Identify tactics to support Infection Prevention
- 3. Identify responsibilities in fire safety
Our Speaker: Rita Snyder, RN, MSN, NE-BC, CHSP
Chief Patient Safety Officer for Bon Secours Mercy Health
Rita Snyder is the Chief Patient Safety Officer for Mercy Health. Her responsibilities include Patient Safety initiatives, Accreditation Readiness, Regulatory compliance and oversight of corporate policies.
She is responsible for accreditation and regulatory compliance for the legacy Mercy’s hospitals and numerous ambulatory care sites. Her compliance responsibilities include but are not limited to Joint Commission, CMS Conditions of Participation, EPA, OSHA, Ohio Department of Health regulations, CAP, HIPAA regulations. She also serves as the organization’s resident expert on Ohio Nursing law.
She was a surveyor with the Joint Commission for over 9 years, surveying in the Accreditation Program for Hospitals.
Rita is board certified as a Nurse Executive in Nursing Administration (NE-BC) by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. She is also board certified as a Certified Healthcare Safety Professional (CHSP) at the master level through the Board of Hazard Control Management.
She has had several article publications in numerous professional nursing journal

Facilitator Guided Pop Corn/Networking Session (0.5 contact hours)
Utilizing a facilitator to guide discussions participants will explore a collaborative approach to various volunteer topics with fellow directors and coordinators sharing best practices to expand the reach of Volunteer Services within their own facilities.
